Real life games, also known as live-action games or immersive experiences, are interactive games that take place in the real world. Here are some characteristics of real-life games:

1. Duur en beleving: A real life game can range from 45 minutes to 3.5 hours. During such a game, you play the lead role in your own movie. It is like a cinematic experience in which you determine your own story. Each game has a specific goal to achieve, and you are encouraged to interact with actors and other participants.

2. Interactie met facilitators: Tijdens real life games kom je in contact met facilitators die deel uitmaken van het verhaal. Je kunt verschillende verhaallijnen ontdekken en je keuzes beïnvloeden het verdere verloop van het spel.

3. Diverse genres: Real life games kunnen verschillende genres omvatten, zoals mysterie, avontuur, horror, detectiveverhalen en meer. Denk aan escape rooms, speurtochten, interactieve theaterstukken en zelfs stadsverkenningsspellen.

4. Fysieke en mentale uitdagingen: Deze spellen dagen je uit op fysiek en mentaal vlak. Je moet raadsels oplossen, aanwijzingen volgen, samenwerken met anderen en soms zelfs fysieke obstakels overwinnen.

Real life games are excellent for team building for several reasons:

1. Cooperation and Communication: Real life games require team members to work together, communicate and devise strategies to achieve goals. This promotes better team dynamics and helps build trust between colleagues.

2. Problem solving: During real life games, teams face challenging situations and puzzles. Solving these problems requires creativity, critical thinking and combining different skills. This helps team members improve their problem-solving skills.

Larp is the abbreviation for Live action Role-Playing. It is an activity in which participants enter a fictional reality with each other. This fictional reality is maintained with each other by playing from a role or position. The goal for the players is to solve missions, quests or (social interaction) challenges that are played out in a narrative form. However, Larp is not about winning, but about the journey, the experience of getting to that goal. 

Fantasy Larp

Traditionally, a Larp is played in the Fantasy theme: the Middle Ages before the invention of printing and gunpowder, with a dose of magic and magical creatures. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings is an important foundational work for this. It has been larped since 1976 and in the Netherlands since 1990. The Larp Fantasy Heroes is a simplified but fairly complete version of a Larp, making larping accessible to a wide audience. It is a so-called PvE (Player vs. Enemy) game, a cooperative game, where the adventurers play against the extras. 

Larp as a medium

Since 1999, there has also been a movement, the Nordic Larp community, that considers Larp as a medium, like theater, TV or film. With this interactive storytelling mode, new Larps have been created in which immersion, the immersion in a phenomenon or one's own character, is central. Larp: what can I do with it?

A Larp provides an ideal environment to experiment with desired behaviors or experience phenomena that are not advisable to experience in reality. The worst that can happen to you is that you are not understood or your character dies in the interactive story. Go ahead and exaggerate your strengths, try practicing a weak competence or do something that is not possible in reality because the risks are far too great in real life. Immersion

Because we collectively maintain an alternate reality, your brain can accept this as “reality. When you return to the real reality, your brain has to switch gears. This can manifest itself in different ways: talking enthusiastically at the table with each other for a long time about all that has happened. You spend several hours looking back at what you all experienced. Or, in the extreme case, even reconsidering your choices during the larp for days. This “bleed” or “larp hangover” is proof that you have been completely immersed in the larp for a while.

Yes indeed! The Larp Fantasy Heroes is designed for people who have no experience with Larpen. It is action-oriented, has puzzle elements and is roleplayed.

For the latter, the only condition is that you accept the fictional reality we create together. You usually just play yourself. And if you go for it, you play a character a little further away from you. Or you augment a certain characteristic of yourself in the character. So you don't need any improvisational, stage or tabletop role-playing experience. 

In short, everyone will find something in the experience he or she likes. And the structure ensures that most will leave the forest with the feeling of having experienced something truly special today.

Some games may vary in length. We then omit challenges. For example Space Heroes or Agaath's Erfenis.

Others have a set format such as Fantasy Heroes. That experience takes 3.5 hours and practice has shown that it cannot be shorter.

The debrief is part of the experience, but if you choose to use only the fun, then we omit the learning during the debrief. We then do not do the debrief or reflect on behavior and functioning.

Deze term hoor je steeds vaker. Wat is het nu?

In de VR en AR wereld is immersie de perceptie omringd te zijn door - en deel uit te maken van - een andere omgeving dan onze normale dagelijkse omgeving. De gaming industrie vertaalt dit naar een geloofwaardige digitale omgeving, meestal met de nadruk op het grafische en beweging.

Het omringt zijn door een alternatieve omgeving om tot immersie te komen is echter niet voldoende. In Larp noemen we dit de 360 graden aankleding. Een kasteel, een bos of in het algemeen een bijzondere locatie ondersteunen het onderdompelen. Wat is er dan nog meer nodig?

Laten we andersom redeneren. Wanneer ben je echt ondergedompeld? Als je na het kijken van een film de aftiteling ziet of bij het sluiten van het boek als het uit is even emotioneel geraakt bent. Die tinteling in je buik, dat verrukte gevoel, die traan, die een paar seconden aanhouden. En bij een goede Larp ervaring kan dit uren of zelfs dagen duren. Bij Larp ga je ook nog eens als je keuzes van tijdens de Larp heroverwegen: de Larp-kater. Dit wordt ook wel 'bleed' genoemd.

Hoe bereik je die Larp-kater in meer of mindere mate? Je hersenen kunnen maar 1 werkelijkheid bevatten. Op het moment dat je de alternatieve werkelijkheid van de ervaring volledig accepteert, dan ben je ondergedompeld. Dat moment heb je helaas vaak niet bewust door. Maar je merkt het wel achteraf. Als je weer uit de immersive experience stapt en terecht komt in de echte wereld, dan moeten je hersenen schakelen. Hoe meer je immersed bent geweest, hoe heftiger de schakeling, hoe steviger de Larp-kater.

Voor de duidelijkheid: immersion iets anders dan 'in flow zijn'. Flowstatus bereik je als de uitdaging waarmee je bezig bent precies uitdagend genoeg is. Dat ga je op in het moment. Als je gamed, dan raak je in flow. In de film ga jij geen uitdaging aan, dus opgaan in de film, ondergedompeld zijn in de film, is geen flow. 

Wat is het in films of boeken dat je laat onderdompelen? Wat zorgt ervoor dat de immersie in het medium Larp 1000x sterker kan zijn dan in een boek of film? We vermoeden dat de identificatie met het personage van de film of dat je zelf speelt de basis vormt. Je krijgt er een emotionele band mee. Die band ontstaat o.a. door het uitvoeren van acties, interacties met anderen en het maken van keuzes (challenging, social and agency: zelfdeterminatie theorie, de basis van intrinsieke motivatie).

Tevens bevind je je in een dramatische situatie, een tegenstelling waaruit je je speel, puzzelt, vecht: de reis van de held, alsof je leven er vanaf hangt. En omdat je filmster het script volgt en jij echte keuzes maakt (of denkt te kunnen maken) en je het kampvuur ruikt, de kou voelt en het eten proeft, is jouw onderdompeling vele maler intenser.

Een 360-graden omgeving is dus niet voldoende om je te laten onderdompelen. Sterker nog, je kunt immersed raken in een black-box-theater, een zeg maar 0-graden omgeving. Een immersed experience is dus veel meer dan de omgeving. Samengevat: even de held zijn in een niet bestaande werkelijk. Een paar momentjes zijn al voldoende. En een slecht plot, saaie uitdagingen en mensen om je heen die niet bij je passen, leveren dus geen onderdompeling op, hoe mooi de wereld in de VR of de aankleding van de escape room is vormgegeven.

Larping can certainly be done in the winter! Our Larp activities go on basically anytime, regardless of the weather. We make sure the experience is fun and safe, even in the colder months. Think indoor workshop, warm costumes and possibly transparent rain ponchos that can be put on over the costume. It is a unique way to experience the winter atmosphere and immerse yourself in a fantasy world. 

You can Larpen at various locations in the Netherlands and even beyond! If you want to organize the “ThemePark” project management game, there are a number of organizational issues to consider:

1. Number of participants: Zorg ervoor dat je een team hebt van 9 tot 20 deelnemers. Bij grotere groepen kunnen meerdere sessies parallel plaatsvinden.

2. Location: De game kan op verschillende locaties worden gespeeld, zoals op kantoor, in een nabijgelegen zaal of op een van onze locaties.

3. Tijd: Reserveer 4 tot 7 uur voor de game, zodat er voldoende tijd is voor zowel de uitvoering als de reflectie en debriefing achteraf.

4. Doelgroep: Deelnemers kunnen projectmanagers, opdrachtgevers, stuurgroepleden, projectmedewerkers en PMO-ers zijn.

5. Faciliteiten: Zorg voor een ruimte die geschikt is voor de groepsgrootte en die de benodigde faciliteiten biedt, zoals tafels, stoelen en audiovisuele apparatuur.
